Scouts

Age

Scouts are aged between 10½ and 14 years. The Scout Troop is our oldest Section in 1st Ditchling Scouts but we have close links with Hassocks and Hurstpierpoint Explorers and Mid Sussex Young Leaders for those wishing to continue in Scouting beyond 14.

The Scout Promise

On my honour, I promise that I will do my best
To do my duty to God and to the King,
To help other people
And to keep the Scout Law

Scouts create and sign up to a Code of Conduct at the start of each term too.

Structure

Each Scout Troop consists of small units of six to eight Scouts called a Patrol, usually led by a Patrol Leader.

Meetings

Thursdays 7.30pm – 9.00pm

Scouts usually meet weekly during term time and are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme with the chance to earn a number of Challenge Awards and activity badges.

Outdoor activities feature prominently, with the highlight being camping. Throughout the year, Scouts learn various skills, such as map reading, camp cooking and first aid in preparation for camp in addition to traditional Scouting skills needed for adventure and survival!

Other activities include climbing, watersports, arts and crafts and go-karting as well as the chance to take part in District Events and Challenges such as the Raft races, Swimming Gala, Mid Sussex Challenge Hike and Cookery competitions. The focus is on a balanced programme that helps Scouts to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know and develop their own abilities and confidence.

International Scouting

Its international aspect gives Scouting a special appeal: in 2007, 40,000 Scouts from around the world attended the World Jamboree in the UK, and Scouts regularly participate in international camps and experiences both on home soil and abroad, each of them a unique experience in its own right.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
